I want to give you a little gift. This is chapter 1 of my book, Fear Is Not the Boss of You. This book has been 4 years in the making and it is finally time to launch, even if it is in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. And maybe now is the time more than ever that people need this message about fear. Being overwhelmed, or stuck, or afraid does not have to be your story. There is a better way. Let me tell you about it.

And, I would be sooooo honored if you would like to purchase a copy of the entire book. Just go to jenniferallwood.com/book. You can get the audiobook, hardback, paperback—whichever trips your trigger!

I have had a word in my heart and I think this is the right time to share it. There are so many things right now that are dividing us as a society. Politics, opinions on COVID-19 and how to handle it, and so much more. It is all causing so much division. I want to remind us all that the fight is not with each other. The real fight is between good and evil, and it will be waged on our knees, not in comments on Facebook. I hope this episode is an encouragement to you!

I wanted to start this morning off with a little bit of hope and positive thinking. I want to take a few minutes to find the silver lining. Everyone has a certain level of loss right now. We are all grieving something, but we also all kind find at least one silver lining. What will it be for you? What is something good being birthed out of the uncertain, crazy times?

Silver Linings

  1. Often what we think is loss can just be a pivot point to something better.
  2. Use this gift of time.
  3. Dig up dreams planted in your heart.

I want to take a moment today to give you some actionable steps and advice during the crazy and bizarre event we are living through right now. We can either look for peace or let ourselves spiral in panic. I want to help you fight for inner peace. I hope these tips help you look at what you are doing and make any changes that might be helpful during this time.

Action Steps

  1. Grieve and get on with it. Grief requires a lot of grace and has no timeline.
  2. Control consumption of content. Guard yourself.
  3. Who and what you are surrounding yourself is critical. Are they leading you more towards faith or towards panic? Find people and accounts that are turning you back to Jesus.
  4. Keep your mind on these things— things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8).
  5. Pray more and panic less. Be in prayer more than you are consuming the news.

Times are pretty crazy right now and people are handling it in so many different ways. But one thing I want us all to keep in check is pain-shaming or playing the hardship olympics. There is always someone worse off, but that doesn't mean your pain or fear or frustration or sadness isn't valid. Often times, people just want to be seen and heard. Listen as I share an experience from my week where I was pain shamed. I also got some great feedback and advice from you guys that I know to will be helpful!

Sometimes the enemy can use distraction to take your focus off where it needs to be. However, I think God can also use something in our lives as a way to distract us in a good way. Right now I am doing a liver detox and have been very distracted by focusing on the health and wellness of my family. The blessing is that it has prevented me from worrying and fretting over my conference and book tour. We can reframe distraction as a way to help us deal with worry and struggle!

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

I just love it when God gives me a whole idea from something seemingly small like a workout move. I was trying to follow along with my Peloton app and was really making a mess of this particular exercise. Then the instructor said it was okay if we were struggling. She explained we were teaching our bodies how to recover quickly. Listen in as I unpack how we can use this concept in our businesses and lives. Let's look at how we can reframe stumbling or failing as training for success!

Training to Confidence

  • Training (including failure) gives us strength.
  • Strength gives us courage.
  • Courage gives us the ability to try new experiences.
  • Experiences give us confidence.

Have you ever entered a password and thought you have it right, but it didn't work? Or, do you remember old padlocks where if you were just one tiny click off, the lock wouldn't open? I want you to think of what you have going on right now in life and business. Is it possible that maybe you have one thing out of alignment? Maybe there is one thing that you need to adjust and then everything else will fall into place. I have some questions to help you check your alignment.

Alignment Check

  • Are you working in the right place?
  • Are you in the right relationship or holding on to a wrong relationship?
  • Are you at the right church?
  • Have you made a wrong partnership in business?
  • Are you selling the right product?
  • Are you doing what God is asking you to do?

I have seen something several times lately that I am not okay with. It is people using someone's faith as a way to guilt or shame them into doing something. This form of manipulation should not be tolerated. It is not okay, and I want to give you permission to not be taken advantage of in this way. Instead, know what the Bible says and let that be what guides your decisions in life and business.

What You Can Do

  1. You can stand your ground.
  2. You are not a bad person or a bad Christian if you don’t do what they say.

In the last few weeks, I have come across several women who are using their faith as an excuse to not grow their businesses and not have boundaries in their businesses. I am all for giving things away, like this podcast. But if you are not ever making money, it is a service or a ministry you are providing, not a business. Just because you love Jesus, does not mean you are to give everything away for free and not have any boundaries with your time and skills. I know this message is for someone, so listen in!

Ask Yourself!

  • Are there areas in your life where you need to take a closer look at the boundaries you have or maybe don't have in place?
  • Are you giving away your time at the expense of your family and/or business?
  • Are you undervaluing your products and/or services?
  • Are there changes you need to make in your pricing or business plan?

Have you ever noticed that the enemy is just waiting for you to gain momentum and get the courage to do something you know God wants you to do, only so he can put a stop to it? He will steal, kill, and destroy using discouragement! You need to be wise enough to recognize when this happens. You also need a strategy and an arsenal to not let the discouragement win. One of the best ways I have found to battle discouragement is to go to my vault of courage. Listen in as I share the details!

TAKE ACTION!

  • Start building your vault of courage!
    • Gather emails, DMs, cards that lift you up and are encouraging.
    • Write down Bible scriptures that encourage you when you are down.
    • Put these things together and have them ready the next time you feel discouraged. Take the time to find the courage to continue instead of stopping or getting stuck.
